By Companies thought using AI to write code would be a magic fix for productivity. From the outside, it looks like a huge success. But behind the scenes, it’s actually kind of funny—and very stressful. AI is churning out so much code so fast that human programmers are completely drowning in it.
Too Much Code, Too Little Time
When a company uses AI, the amount of code they produce skyrockets.
- A Crazy Example: One financial company started using a popular AI tool and suddenly had 10 times more code being written.
- This created a massive traffic jam: a backlog of one million lines of code that human workers now have to read and double-check.
Why Does Human Checking Matter?
You can’t just let AI write code and launch it. AI makes mistakes. If bad code gets approved, it can break software or create serious security holes. Even massive tech companies like Amazon and Meta have had problems where AI tools did things they weren’t supposed to do.
Because so much code is being cranked out, the stress is spilling over into other departments like sales and marketing, who can’t keep up with the constant changes.
The Irony of Layoffs
Here is where the situation gets a bit backwards:
- Last year, companies laid off over 54,000 people, often using “AI” as the excuse to cut costs.
- However, AI actually creates more work that requires a human touch.
- Someone has to test the AI’s work. The problem? There simply aren’t enough security engineers on the planet to check the mountains of code American companies are suddenly producing.
“AI Brain Fry”
Instead of making life easier, AI is making programmers’ jobs much harder. They are now expected to produce way more code than before, while also having to babysit the AI constantly to make sure it isn’t messing up. This is causing serious burnout, which researchers are starting to call “AI brain fry.”
How Are Companies Trying to Fix This?
Companies are stuck trying to figure out how to handle this tidal wave of code. Right now, they are trying two very different solutions:
- The Human Approach: Some bosses demand that a human must review every single line of code. If an AI writes something confusing and it breaks later, no human will know how to fix it because nobody understood it in the first place.
- The “More AI” Approach: Other companies are trying to solve the AI problem by throwing more AI at it. They are building and buying brand new AI tools whose only job is to grade and review the code written by the first AI.
In short: AI is writing code faster than humans can read it, stressing everyone out, and proving that you can’t just fire your human workforce and expect the robots to run things perfectly!
